Are they nuts

So the idiots at the Discovery Channel Europe decided to come up with a program that reenact’s the autopsy of Michael Jackson. They are using this rather bad taste in a picture to help promote the show…

2010

It has been a crazy year for sure so I shall review in no certain order everything that happened.

I lost my dear friend Jon Clinton to Cancer. I was very happy to have reconnected with him over the year prior. He is missed every day.

Men's NCAA Final Four was at Lucas Oil Stadium and I got called in to provide the "stadium soundtrack" like I did for "Sweet 16" the year before and what I for Colts home games. Being set up 75 feet from the court was very bad ass and getting paid sure did not suck as well.

Added a Tuesday night "Rock Night" at the Rock House Café, met some really cool down to earth people from spring to winter. Was good to play a format I don't normally play in the clubs. Was fun while it lasted and I hope to return there again someday?

While working at Buz Bar I started the Rock House gig and picked up Wednesday nights at Peppers Broad Ripple. I had to have a plan since they were cutting my days and start times and I was losing money fast! There were many bad decisions that kept chipping away at the business they were doing. I kept hearing "the economy is killing our business". That is true to a point however, when you can drive in your car 10 minutes any direction and other bars are PACKED then there is a problem within plain and simple.

Knowing they were running out of money and not wanting to stick around for the new owners as they told me they were going to close, Mike at Peppers scooped me up full time and I was back! Was good to play for a crowd again and to work for people that take stock in what I bring to the table. I now play 2 nights at Broad Ripple and 2 nights in Greenwood. It is fun to go to work at a bar again. I am bummed that damn near NONE of the people I met and played for at Buz Bar have ever shown up to Peppers but I have tuned out the bullshit excuses I was getting and am over that chapter in my nightlife.

Celebrated 15 years at the day job! That is a long time and happy to be there! Started season #9 doing the music for home games for the Indianapolis Colts.

Celebrated my 2 year wedding anniversary this year as well. Takes a lot to put up with me, I am a mess...

Happy Holidays..

Remembering Jon

I think I may have started and stopped writing this more times than I can remember. Finally I have it finished and wanted to give a glimpse into the friendship between Jon and I as well as remembering him on his birthday..

When I moved from Gary to Crown Point in 1986, it was a big move for us. Not as big as when the Jackson 5 left and became famous but it was scary none the less. I was nervous about how I would mesh with the people there. I wasn't in school anymore so there wasn't that place where I could meet people and try to make a go that way. I didn't have a solid job and the DJ thing wasn't really getting off the ground so I tried to "get in where I fit in".

Jon Clinton was one of the first people that I met through my Godmother's son Marc. Come to find out everyone it seemed hung at the Roller Crown Skating Rink so I ended up hanging out there and got a DJ job there as well. Jon and I became really close friends. He had 2 sisters as did I. He was trying to figure out what to do after High School and so did I. We were inseparable! He had a killer record collection and was also getting into the DJ thing as well. He had more Prince records than maybe one man should have but it just means I had more to borrow if I needed it.

We worked in Chicago lots, Chicago Music Company, Jam Productions, etc. Did many shows and were like brothers. We made some great money doing really cool stuff. Now, we did get into trouble and paid our price but one thing was for sure, neither one of us ever judged the other. Just two dudes trying to have fun and make a buck in the process. And of course running a few "hustles" along the way that we were still laughing about this past year.

Jon ended up leaving the area to spend time with his Father and we lost touch right around 1989 or so. I would get updates from my Mom when he would visit and for years and years I heard nothing.

Through the magic of Facebook we re-connected in the summer of 2009. We were texting and calling like time had stood still. It was great to have my old friend back. That Summer I had went to his house and reconnected in person with my dear friend. Was like old times, telling old stories and clowning like we always had. He had also told me he was a Cancer survivor, or so we all thought...

In Jan of 2010 he was making trips back down to the Simon Cancer Center here in Indianapolis for testing and such as the evil that he thought was gone, looked like it was returning. He would call and we kept trying to meet up but never were able to make it happen. Sometime in that same month he was going in for a major surgery. I went to see him at the hospital the night before. When I got there he was his ornery self. Bitching at the nurses and cracking jokes with me.

His Doctor came in to talk to him and told him this was the last procedure that they would do and if Cancer returned, they had exercised all options at treat it and that was it. Once the Doc's left we talked in private about the news he was given and how he felt about it. The nurse showed up to take him down for a CAT scan and he said "I'll be right back" I said "ok I will wait here". After an hour he came back and said "I didn't think you would still be here" and I said "hey fucker when someone in a hospital in a Cancer wing says I will be right back, ya have to wait!" We both laughed and I told him to check back in once he went back home.

In March he was getting sick again. We were texting and calling back and forth and he was keeping me posted as best as he wanted to. I was sad because I remembered what I heard his doctor tell him back in Jan so I was trying to be the best support system that I could even being as far away as I can. I cracked as many jokes as I could since that is how I try to deal with bad news like this.

Towards the end of March, Jon's wife Dawn called me and said they were planning a benefit for Jon and he said "I want my DJ there". We were working on getting a date set and the date they picked was the same weekend I was also DJ for Final Four. Jon said "man fuck the Final Four". We both laughed as he knew I could not get out of it. I joked and said "you have to work a schedule around the dude that is playing for free" we both laughed some more.

They picked the date of April 11th 2010. I drove up from Indy, brought all my gear and was ready to rock the house. Everyone showed up and the party was on. His kids made me laugh and watching Dawn run around like a crazy woman was also amusing as well.

The last part of the afternoon he brought a chair up and sat right next to my DJ rig. It was like nothing else was going on. We were talking about what was next in his life on earth then shifting to playing old school RUN-DMC records and it was surreal. I kept from crying in front of him as deep down I feared this was going to be the last time we would have a moment like this. I would have played all night anything he wanted just to preserve that moment in time.

On Monday April 19th, he sent me a text and said "man hospice just showed up, this sucks". I freaked out and called him and said "what does that mean" in his smartass way he said "what the fuck do you think it means". Once I hung up the phone I cried my eyes out all day at work. I was losing my friend, my brother and nothing was going to change what was obviously in God's hands.

Dawn and I were calling and texting back in and forth and Jon's condition was not good. She was relaying messages to him from me. I told him to tell Hospice to get him a wheel chair and I was going to head down on that Sunday and he and I were going to go for a walk. He said he would love that so that was the plan which was soon going to change and not for the better.

That week Dawn and Jon and I were texting and things where not looking good at all. Friday night April 23rd I got a call from Dawn while I was spinning and she said that Jon had left for the Hospice in an ambulance and it was not looking good at all. I told her I would head up there once I got some sleep but something deep down inside told me I needed to leave after work. I woke my wife up and we headed to Crown Point.

I remember talking to Jon in the car like he was sitting next to me. I know he was getting ready to cross over to a much better place so I was pleading that he stick around till I got there. I placed a call and his sister answered the phone and I asked her how far she was from Jon and she told me she was right outside of the room. I said "go in his room and relay this message from me". "Jon I love ya like a brother and I am on my way, don't do nothing till I get there". He responded "ok" and we kept flying up I-65.

I arrived at the Hospice Center and went to his room to talk to him. I had heard that he was in and out of conscienceless so Dawn said "Jon, Alex is here". He turned to me to shake my hand and I said "Jon you know I love ya like a brother and I told you I would be here" he said "I know bro". I tried my best to keep it together as best I could. I told him the next phase was going to be wonderful no more pain and suffering and no more having to work and from here on out it would be easy street.

Before I walked out of the room I said "man how you feeling" and in half ass wit he said "like shit".

Shortly thereafter at my friends bedside, I watched him pass.

Many of those who were there that day said that Jon waited on me to get there. I can say without a doubt that day has impacted my life in so many ways. It really makes you think about real friends and family and completely un-breakable bonds people can have. I replay it in my mind more times than I should but that is how I deal and will move forward.

Going through something like this makes you think about LOTS. The things we often take for granted often can be seen in a new light. You really get to see how precious life is and how you should make the best of it all the time and not leave any stone unturned. Sometimes you question why life deals us the hand that it does but I think overall it is a lesson that we are always learning. None of us will ever have all the answers to why things go the way they do. We can only hope on earth to live as best we can and to move on peacefully when our time is over…

Rest in peace my dear friend Jon Clinton 12/11/68-4/24/10

New Advances

Horse racing simulcasting moves to Dish Network this month. In the past we have used "decoders" to get a secured signal from the racetrack into our facility. The only way you could watch a "simulcast signal" in the past was to take a trip to the track or to an off track betting facility.

Moving to Dish will make it flexible to tune in the signals we need to show to the public here at the OTB. But now that these feeds are no longer "exclusive" to betting parlors and anyone can subscribe to them, what is to say that the person who might be a visitor to the OTB and have Dish Network could shell out the $100 a month to get these same feeds in the comfort of his/her own home? Think about the money and hassle you would save on gas and parking.

Account wagering is still illegal in Indiana but it is safe to say that people are giving out bogus info or out of state info to keep that going. So factor that in with the Dish Network switchover and what happens to Off Track Betting parlors? What happens to simulcasting at the tracks?

Hurt or help? Since I am in the betting business, I might choose the latter..

Give Thanks

I try and keep my blogs about general stuff that hopefully a lot of people can relate to or at least maybe laugh at. I am thankful I was able to see some of my family over the holidays. Some weren't available for more reasons that I care to mention.

When you have a family that is divided for a number of reasons you are often reminded that you aren't gonna make everyone happy all the time. In a perfect world I'm sure everyone wants to see us when we head up North. In a perfect world everyone should be able to gather under one roof so we can all see each other.

Then again, nothing and no one is perfect

Free Thinking

Again my age might be showing as far as to what is "hip and or "trendy" or whatever. I am stunned why anyone unless they are loaded OR go to a bar and spend nothing past a cover charge, would pass up a chance at drinks being 25 CENTS! I was amazed to see people wait in line somewhere else and pay full price on top of that! I would pick cheap booze over any place. But that is just free thinking B…

Me slow down?

So I decided to take my schedule down to 4 bar nights. My Tuesday night gig was slowing down and it was getting to the point where I know they needed to make a change. I have been pretty successful in pulling the plug first so it just made sense. They are some great people to work with and peeps to hang out with as well, I will miss it. But I like rest more and focusing my energies with Peppers North & South will be full steam ahead.

I'm over bitching about not seeing people come and support what I do. I have come to the realization that if they happen to show up when I am playing it will be a nice surprise and I will be glad to see them. I am done excepting it so there is no let down on my end. I have a core group of real people I can count on and that is all that I need.

It is good to work for a venue that supports what you do and the concept of all of it. That combination will create longevity for overall success and solid position in the marketplace. I wish I would have gotten a fraction of "status updates" for my Tuesday night as others. How do you compete with the over flooding and posting of the same event over and over again? Facebook is not the total answer to pack any place but the maintenance aspect of it promoting EVERYTHING your bar has to offer should be standard. With my rate being far below what the standard is for DJ's and bands alike, it would make sense to help make that night fly just like the others. But no one is to blame, this is just my 24 years in the bar biz coming out.

I'm hoping that I only said "bye" to a night of working and not to the cool people that I have worked with and met along the way. I will miss you guys and I hope if your travels are ever to Broad Ripple or Greenwood you will stop in at Peppers.

Hey that’s me

Out of boredom I decided to Google "Alex B" to see if I matched and of course a million others showed up. When I did "Alex B Indianapolis" my blog was the first match. I thought that was kinda cool. It doesn't mean much as I really don't have a real idea of how many people visit my blog or my websites, YouTube etc. I see the occasional people in the bars that will remember Alex & Juan or Alex B on X 103 which is cool as well. So out of more boredom and since I don't have anything to write about, I will recap the obvious or not so obvious..

Flaws of Facebook

In no certain order I shall rant about what bugs me about Facebook. I am perhaps guilty of some of the things but a lot of you are also as well. Here we go..

If almost every post talks about your "boo" "love" or how great and perfect your man/husband, girlfriend/wife is, knock it off it makes people wanna puke. Facebook is a great way to create a façade for everyone on how great your life is but we all know that sometimes it's a bunch of bullshit. When you do flood about how great the new love of your life is and once I have vomited from reading repeat posts, I also of course will be waiting for it to slowly implode!

If you get robbed because you have told the world where you are every minute of the day, you deserve it! If I was a crook I would have my Blackberry on Facebook and follow status updates of those of you that had money. If you are posting that you are going to a concert that gives me enough time to stop on over to your house and grab a few things! If you are publicizing a vacation, you better have a house sitter! You don't think in the world of mobile internet people aren't already doing that?

If your posts and replies end up being just between you and your significant other and you may be replying to each other while you are both home at the same time, please see a shrink! Make sure to include any photo albums of Farmville, Yoville that you may have posted as well.

There is nothing wrong with playing internet games. But when your wall is flooded with the "progress" you been making on said games and nothing else I'm afraid if I did post a "hi" you wouldn't see it anyways. Who has that much time?

I am glad you are able to be the Top Dog in Mafia Wars. Let's take a field trip to Gary Indiana sometime and see if that will help ya any.

Speaking of hi, most of us hide each other's "feeds" making interaction less and less. A random "hi" or "hello" wouldn't be such a bad thing. But if you are busy in your perfect life with your perfect partner I could see how that might be a task to some. If I post a "hi" or whatever and you are too cool or busy to reply back I will delete you and you won't even be paying attention to notice it.

The incomplete status update prompting your friends to reply with "what's wrong" "what happened" "is everything ok" gets old after a while. And not everything should be for public Facebook consumption. It makes ya look like a whack job after a while!

The constant changing of "single/in a relationship" info makes you look just as nuts.

Ok I'm done, time to post to everyone that isn't paying attention that I updated my blog…

And this is news?

In legal docs filed in Joe's wrongful death case against Dr. Conrad Murray, Michael's former alleged manager, Leonard Rowe, wrote a sworn statement in which he claims Katherine acted as Michael's agent, funneling money to Joe for support.
Why is this news? They have lived off Micheal's dime for YEARS! They only way to keep things on track for his kids and legacy is to keep these two MOOCHES away from the money. Mama Jackson should keep cashing her checks and if she is stupid enough to give Joe (who we all know Micheal hated) money then let them handle it!

Suspect?

When a jackass is caught running out of the bank with money, after robbing it, do we "suspect" that he did it? Or is it an open and shut case? Why waste money on court?

My job is NEVER boring!

Are You Ready?

If I know the bank is a stop I have to make before I leave the house I do something crazy and fill out my deposit slip or withdraw slip and have it all ready for my trip out of the house. In the event I forgot this small step, I fill out the same information as I am waiting in the drive-thru line so when it is my turn at the window I can put my transaction in that tube thing and hit the send button and be on my way. I would never think of waiting till it was my turn to fill out the info like some idiots I encountered this morning that of course had to look for a pen to even get the ball rolling!

Another crazy thing I do when I enter a pay garage I glance at the rates to make sure I have the maximum amount of cash on hand. I take that cash and ticket and put it somewhere in my truck so I can get to it easy when I am ready to leave. As soon as I return to my truck the first thing I do is grab the ticket and the cash and get ready to leave the garage. I would never think of looking for the ticket AND the money when it was my turn at the window only to hold up guys like me that are ready to go about my business.

There is no point to this really. Would be nice if everyone took the above points to heart as to maybe speed up the productivity for the day for everyone else

Who needs more than 26k a month?

Looks like Katherine Jackson does…

She filed papers in court this week asking for more than the $26,000 a month she already gets! Are you kidding me? We all know MJ's parents have lived off his money since he started making it. The estate paid off the house that she lives in so there is no house payment and you can't make it on what you are getting? I wonder what Jehovah Witnesses would say about all her greed! I think like when Michael was alive she should shut up and keep cashing the easy money checks!

He’s Baaaaaack

Vacation was fun. I am in love with Hilton Head SC and if there was a way to afford to live there, I would be there in a heartbeat. I always come back with a new outlook on things and a better focus. I work LOTS of hours and all of that so when there is a break in the action, I spare no time and no expense to have quality rest time.

Back at the bar on Saturday this female makes out a "list" of songs she wants to hear. These included songs her husband probably hates and stuff that she hears at Zumba class. I told her I would get as many as I can. She was hell bent in hearing this song by the artist "Colby O'Donnis". No cares about that dude unless he is singing on someone else's record. I tried to get it downloaded but my connection kept dropping. Towards the end of the night she comes up and asks why I did not play her "list", I told her I played most of them and apologized for not getting that Colby track and she stood there and looked at me like I robbed a bank. She says "so you couldn't get that track downloaded" and I said "no I don't have control over the internet connection". She then asked if I knew the previous DJ as to pseudo-insult me and I told her I did not know him.

First off, at the start of the night her husband came up and told me that she said "it sucks in here" he admitted she was drunk and he would probably have to carry her out of the bar. So being a babbling drunk already takes away the "customer is always right" line. He mentioned a few songs she wanted and I played those right away. Second, that demand list might work with your husband but not with me. I play music that appeals to as many people as possible and in most cases the requests I get are songs I'm gonna play anyway so it does work out.

One of her songs was "Rock Yo Hips" by the group "Crime Mob". I wasn't gonna play that song and I doubt hubby would have played it in the truck on the way back to Whiteland.

Colts game was a blast, everything is always better when they win! I hate when people say "we won". "You" did not win, the COLTS won. I would never say that as my fatass wouldn't last one play without leaving the field in a stretcher in traction so I don't say "we won" but rather COLTS WON!

All work and some play

So I had 3 weeks' vacation from my day job this year. 2 of those weeks were used to work other jobs and such for different gigs. This week is different as currently we are in Hilton Head. I simply love it out here. The weather, surroundings and everything is perfect. What a way to spend a Birthday!

Back at it & Good People

Looks like I am back to doing Wednesday nights in Broad Ripple at Peppers. Love interacting with the people, playing what they want to hear and giving them a solid option to party where I am. It's a good time and a break from the predictable.

Rock House on Tuesday nights is a fun gig for me. It is an all rock format and the people I have met and became friends with are really cool. Matt & Starr from the bar take VERY good care of me, James and his sis Amy Joe are solid peeps! I'm always partying with Victor from Dead Man's Grill, Darrel & Topher from Recoil and of course all the regulars that hang out as well. Also, be on the lookout for my musical partner in crime Myles B! His band Alter Ego ROCKS SOLID and you never know when he might be on the decks with me or subbing for me. Good things are ahead!

Time to hide my Speedo in my suitcase I am packing for Hilton Head!

(Now there is no way my fat ass would be caught dead in one of those I just could not think of a good way to end this post. So I guess for now see ya!)

5 Months Out Of Prison...

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Grammy-winning rapper T.I. was arrested along with his wife on suspicion of possessing methamphetamines, five months after the hip-hop star finished a prison stint on weapons charges.

The 29-year-old rapper and his wife, Tameka Cottle, were arrested Wednesday night in West Hollywood after deputies smelled marijuana and pulled the couple over, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said. They were released from jail at about 4 a.m. Thursday after posting $10,000 bail each, sheriff's Deputy Luis Castro said.

Another Pacer In Trouble...

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NBA has suspended Brandon Rush of the Indiana Pacers for violating the league's anti-drug program. Shocked?? NOT! It's a good thing we came up with all that money to keep the team in Indy. In Today's News

...Indy-area home sales fall 30% in July

"Echoing a national trend, home sales in Central Indiana fell 30.4 percent in July, a decline generally blamed on the expiration of a federal housing tax credit meant to help people buying their first residences..."

The economy still sucks and people are broke, plain and simple. And this is news?

Open Up

So I fear the dentist like I fear the IRS. Once I get the shots in the mouth, I am good to go. It's the waiting before that which makes me nuts! I had a 12pm appointment today and when I arrived I was told that the power was out and they would be calling people when it got back on to see who they could fit in. Was the power being off a sign? Could it be a message to put off seeing the dentist for another 4 years? I could have used that as my out but I stuck through it and got called back in at 2.

I did tell everyone that I was a big baby and they were all super cool! I was getting the cleaning broke up into 2 visits so there would not be that much mouth pain and the pain of having to pay for all that work in one visit. So I figured half the cleaning today, the other half in a week and I am set. I figured wrong! Once she started the cleaning she glanced at the X-ray and said that I had a tooth that needed immediate attention! I knew this because it was bothering me so I was not overly shocked at this revelation. Come to find out I lost a filling and I needed to either get a molar pulled or a root canal.

Well, we all know that fillings mean drilling so I agreed to get the filling! A few more "shots to the chops" to keep the numbing train rolling and I was good to go. I talked to the doc about the root canal-vs.-pulling. I don't want my grill looking all jacked up so I told him I would get the root canal done. The whole time I had my IPOD rocking with some Alice In Chains, Haste The Day & Godsmack. I did a good job of drowning out the drilling but my ears were ringing from the music being too loud. Can't win every battle I suppose.

They gave me a prescription for the pain as well as an antibiotic. Since I am not getting any younger, I am going to stick with the treatment plan they have in place and get all this taken care of. It sucks and is gonna cost a few bucks but I am very lucky to have a job with benefits so I can't complain as far as that goes.

Speaking of pain, time to pop a Vicodin…

I thought you had Sunday off

Not the case today. Working the day job and training a new team member..

Whiteland class of 1985 stopped into Peppers Greenwood last night and I had a blast. Since I graduated in 1986 I could relate to this fun crowd and it was a blast! Of course there was that one person not tuned in to what was going on with the "can you play some Hip Hop and R&B" line that gets annoying after a while. I played "Push It" so I hope that made her happy.

When I start playing I normally try and start off with some old school and rock before the mass of people get there. There are a few reasons behind that. In most cases there is an older crowd that is at the bar early that I would like to try and make happy while they are there since they won't be staying all night. Also, I don't like to be one of these guys that has to play "the hits" over and over. I like to play songs from time to time that will make you say "damn I remember that" or something that might make you think back to an easier or happier time in your life. A good DJ knows to musically educate the people and play old and new and throw a good party.

A Birthday Party was in the back part of the room and a woman approached me 15 minutes after I started and said she remembered me from Tremors nightclub (west side of Indy) and asked if I could play "something they can dance to and some Hip Hop". Well there is more to today's music than Hip Hop like, Black Eyed Peas, Kesha, Lady Gaga, Pitbull etc. And when Juan and I worked in Tremors it was not a lost cause as it is now. I told her I had what was hot on radio and did not go too deep in any music type so I can keep everyone happy.

As I am hitting my Old school and such they sent the waitress to come up and insult me about what I was playing. And she said "that Birthday party said they are falling asleep with this shit, play something they can dance to, they said it felt like they were at Ike and Jonesy's". Well Ike & Jonesy's has been open for a long time, they do a great business and are packed so making that reference I guess was somewhat of a compliment in an odd way. All the waitress had to do was to edit all that negativity and say "can you hook that Birthday party up with some mew stuff" or something less harsh than the other.

Mass appeal music is what has kept me in the game since 1986. I'm not changing that anytime soon..

The old "Stuff A Hot Dog" in the pants trick!

Authorities have arrested a Fort Pierce man accused of trying to steal a $6.99 jumbo pack of hot dogs from a Treasure Coast supermarket.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office said Allan Polhemus, 52, was arrested on a theft charge.

According to the incident report, an employee spotted Polhemus stuff a Publix 16-pack of jumbo hot dogs in his pants and walk out of the store.

In Today's News

So Antwuan Cook's wife has accused "American Idol" Fantasia Barrino of sleeping with her husband. There is supposed to be a sex tape or something. Havent see any pictures or that video but here is a picture of his punk ass moving out. No boxes or luggage must be a bitch..

Pacers Rookie Guard Arrested

Indiana Pacers rookie guard Lance Stephenson was arrested in New York over the weekend after police said he pushed his girlfriend down a flight of stairs, hitting her head on concrete.

Stephenson has had prior run-ins with the law. He pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct after being accused of groping a 17-year-old girl in 2008, while he was still in high school.

Indiana Pacer in trouble with the law? Say it isn't so! This dude is 19 years old with a gig in the NBA and he pulls this? 2 years prior to this he was acting a fool in High School Are we that desperate to build this suck ass team that we will take any thug we can afford??

Perspectives

When I first think about saying "God I Hate Mondays" I quickly cut myself off and say "Thank God I can work like I do" and that seems to get me through the week for the most part. Since I do not work the typical Mon-Fri 9-5, my week doesn't have an end point like most people's do. On the weeks of Colts home games, I get no days off, when they are away and during off season, Sunday is my sanctuary day. When I say no days off, keep in mind that I work my full time day job 5 days a week and spin 5 nights in the bars. Throw a Colts home game in there and look out! But, I am lucky to be able to so what I do and that's what motivates me to keep going at it.

Through the years I have spent LOTS of money on web designers. They were worth every penny but then trying to get it updated or the info to update it myself was a pain in the ass! I launched a new website and did it myself. Sure there are better websites and such out there but for what this costs me and I don't have to wait to get done what I want, it is well worth it!

The Pre-season game the Colts lost yesterday is not worth mentioning. Damn, I just did. We know how pre-season is and we know it starts to count on September 19th when we open up our season at home!

I uploaded some new videos on the YouTube page from last week as well.

Have a great week everyone!

In Today's News

Hancock County Sheriff C.K. "Bud" Gray is expected to make a court appearance Monday afternoon, after he spent the weekend in jail on theft, official misconduct and obstruction of justice charges.

Gray was held without bond at the Hamilton County Jail. Authorities said he funneled more than $3,000 in department funds for his personal use.

This is his booking photo...lol

Let it go

I said I was going to stop complaining about people from my last bar gig not stopping by to any of the places I am at now to say hi. It still makes me heated that I haven't heard "I haven't see you since Buz Bar I need to make it out to come see you" from people I thought were my friends but Wednesday night I was really amused. There was someone I worked with at Buz and thought was a "friend", or at least she used to tell everyone that and have not seen her since I left. She walked by Peppers to go to the bar next door to pay a cover and wait in line. My bar did not have a cover or a line to get in but was quite busy (I have video proof on my YouTube page).

I saw this happen since there is a window right behind me so I thought that maybe when she left the bar next door she might pop in to say "hey". Oddly enough she walked past Peppers again and nothing! I didn't care to see her as much as I was amused by her arrogance. When she doesn't have a job and was broke as a joke or has men problems I had to be the listening post more times than I should have. When she had issues with crazy ex's in the bar I had to hear about that also. Some friend she turned out to be huh?

She is just one of MANY people that I have not seen since my last bar gig and one of many that have made ZERO mention about not having seen me in a while blah blah blah. I know that stuff happens, life gets in the way and that entire BS but it seems I am really only relevant when I have "the hook up" for people. So this is the last time I will waste internet bandwidth on the subject or bother with people that are a waste in general.

Relax huh?

Had a great production meeting at the Colts complex this morning I must say. It's really good when you work for people that know what you bring to the table and let you run with it. The meeting was at 8:30am which would have been murder if I was at a bar gigging the night before. I had some editing to do last night and not knowing how long that would take and really having my inner voice and my wife tell me to rest, I took the night off from Rock House. I never just "call off", I have worked through illness, family crap and always have gone in to work.

I called my buddy Matt to make sure it was ok and finally took a night off to "recharge". My schedule normally has me getting 4.5 hours of sleep Tues-Fri working my day job and bar job but last night I had to take a pause for the cause. I regret loosing the money and seeing the peeps but putting my health and sanity first for once made sense.

Now I am ready for Colts Football!

Explain

How this dude was allowed to wear shades for his mug shot?

In Today’s News

"Residents are again on alert in Broad Ripple after two violent robberies within two days."…

Ok, I am really stunned that there could be all these cops in front of the bars scaring drunks or trying to pick up drunken chicks but, you can walk a few blocks in either direction and some jackasses can jump out of the bushes and rob you at gunpoint? It doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever. I think they should have bike racks on the squad car and perhaps jump on some bikes and cruise the outskirts of "the strip". By having the bike racks on the squad car you won't lose the parking space in front of the bars and the intimidation factor that it lends and, it's some good exercise while you wait for some dumbass to stumble of the bar and possible score an arrest.

It goes on and on and on

I started in the game in 1986 and been MANY places, worked with MANY people and for the last two years I got really lazy and complacent in what I was doing. I think it was mainly the fact I knew the bar I was at did not have any money to really make an impact in the marketplace and therefore we were never going to be a "stand out" in what we were doing. I know I am better off by myself as I am now. I can take full blame if something fails and better yet, I don't have to worry about anyone close to me trying to screw me. At times I replay some of the shit that was said and done behind my back which fuels me to have that much more drive to keep moving on and leave that all behind me. I always make friends wherever I am and they all seem to stay behind when I move on, sad when ya think about it but with every new adventure the people are that much more fun!

I have stepped up my game and like to think I deliver a good product to those that have me. I must be doing something right to be playing 5 nights huh? The fact the music formats are very different each night keeps me thinking of songs I haven't played in while as well as new ways to rock a party.

I'm just being me

I guess

I could blog about the violence that went on downtown during the Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration but I won't. I am hoping someone in office will make some suggestion to stop any late night events or just cancel this bullshit all together. You have people that try and have a positive event for some people and most of the people use that as an excuse to overrun the city and mess everything up. It's a joke and not a funny one..

I Know You

So last night at Peppers some folks came up to me and said "we thought that was you". They used to come into Buz Bar which is the bar I had worked at previous. I forgot their names but I do remember seeing them in there and it was cool to see people that had once came into a place I worked and then ended up running into me again. They said they would be back and I was stoked about that big time! I'm not holding my breath on if I see any more peeps from the past. If I do then that is good, if I make new friends at the parties that I rock now well, that's even better!

I shot some video last night that I will post sometime over the weekend. The video tells a small story of how it is. Showing up in person is much more fun!

I Now Pronounce You

BOOKED!

I have a wedding coming up that I am spinning at this weekend. I normally do not DJ weddings unless I know the people that are getting married and in this case I do. I could make a ton of loot booking weddings however that would limit my talents as the focus is on someone else's special day and not me rocking the party in a bar for a bunch of drunks. When you don't know the bride and groom and they don't know what ya bring to the table, it can become a nightmare quick.

You have the parents that want all the old stuff and that most likely will bitch that it is too loud, youngsters in attendance not having a clue asking for Hip Hop music, drunken bridesmaids and groomsmen that will have their own ideas of what will "get the party going" which could be VERY opposite of what the client wants. Add a potential bridezilla to the mix and all hell could break loose. Then at the end of the night if the smallest thing can be blamed on you, there is the issue of getting final payment. Since I limit my wedding bookings to "friends of friends" I don't have to live a nightmare.

When I got the call for this gig I was stoked. I had worked with both the Bride & Groom at a previous bar gig and they both said they could think of no one else they would want to DJ for them. I am honored and happy to hear that and can't wait to make this event one they can remember.

Where Is

When I start a new bar I will always encounter someone asking about "the other guy" who worked prior to me. I feel bad when anyone looses a job or whatever that case may be. I am always polite, NEVER bash anyone and simple respond with "they are no longer here and what can I play for you". I try and make the customer feel at home and convince them I will throw just as good or a better party then the guy before. When they start in with well "he used to play this or used to play that" I pay close attention on what the songs or artists might be and mesh that into selling them on how I run things.

Most times I can put them at ease and play something at least close to what they want and keep them there. Some DJ's send in friends to ask about where they are and try and bait me to say something bad or have that "you suck" look when they look at me. It does not bother me because I am there and the "other guy" is not

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

Where did ya go?

I never seem to be stunned when I move to another bar gig how almost NO ONE ever comes to check out a new place I may have moved to. When I am the resident DJ at a place I get to know the staff I work with and regulars that are there. I make sure they hear all the songs they like, make sure when they are having a Birthday or group or whatever that they are well taken care of and try to be "their D.J" as best I can. Most cases I end up being a therapist or whatever but I make myself accessible as that is my job. I'm not one of these arrogant pricks that lock themselves in a booth and not take requests and think I am too cool for the room. I have never been "that guy" and have no plans to be. Would be nice for people I have "hooked up" throughout the years with a fun place to party to maybe venture to see what I am up to.

All my gigs are highly publicized so when I get that bullshit line of "where did you go after (bar name)" I don't buy it at all. People are cool with you when you can "do for them" but rarely ever give back and "do for you". It's cool, I will keep playing my tunes and throwing my party wherever I end up and with whoever shows up...

The Hustle

Not the dance by any means but the week I am smack in the middle of that is the hustle! Most people had a 3 day weekend with the holidays and then when they came back to work on Tuesday, came back to a quick 4 day work week. I kinda sort of came back to a 4 day work week. My day job will be 4 days Tue-Fri so that is ok if I was like most people. Add bar nights Tue & Wed then Fri & Sat, add a Colts event on Saturday afternoon, and add a graduation open house on Sunday afternoon. I am so thankful to be able to be this active and fortunate to have the work that I do. Since I am bored and really have nothing to blog about but the fact I am tired, I will break it down like this. See the numbers, feel my fatigue…LOL!

Tuesday 10am-6pm Day Job
Tuesday 10pm-2am Spinning Rock House

Wednesday 10am-6pm Day Job
Wednesday 9pm-2am Spinning at Peppers Broad Ripple

Thursday 10am-5pm Day Job

Janet Going On Tour

After rave reviews from American Idol, Janet says she is going back on the road..No word yet if her ass will be on it's own tour bus..

Thursday, May 27, 2010

Winner or?

So Lee Dewise wins Amercian Idol. This year there was not anyone that stood out to be like a Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood or Daughtry. This dude might have a record that people will listen to for a split second and then he will fade away. As long as the record lables keep throwing "out of nowhere" artists like Lady Gaga, Justin Beiber at the world, people will forget about these people we watched for soo many weeks become the "latest and greatest". I wish him luck. If Crystal would have won it would have been like another Joan Osborne, Allanis Morristte, Avril Levigne type that would have been ok for a split second untill the next Lady Gaga record came out..

Brittany Murphy's Husband Found Dead

No waste of money on a murder trial for his wife!

Monday Means

For some it means the ever so worn out "I hate Mondays, is it the weekend yet" blah blah blah! For me I look at it as another week I am lucky to have the opportunities that I do. I can say 100% that I love what I do! Sometimes sleep can be bit rough with bar nights during the week but I am able to provide pretty well while enjoying it and that drives me to keep going. I do have some weeks where I am "over booked" like next week where I have 2 extra events in addition to the day job and bar nights. I will make it happen, I always do…

So I don't "hate" Mondays or my jobs, who could be that selfish with all of the people out of work, people losing homes and not able to provide the basics to get through life or even a week or sometimes a day! I would rather be dead tired and know I did all I can to get to that point then to sit on my fat ass and have expectations from everyone else but myself…

I WANT SLASH BACK!

Who shot ya?

I finally saw the movie "Notorious" over the weekend. I figured it would be safer to watch it at home then in a theater where things had gotten crazy when then movie was first released. I guess the story was based on info from Biggies Mom and others that were familiar with his life and career. The part about 2 Pac getting shot in the lobby of the same building that the "Bad Boy" guys were in recording upstairs and them not knowing anything about it was comical as they still stick with "they knew nothing about it". To this day I think it is bull! It was a good movie more in part, it was FREE!

Brought To You By..

Seems like my blog has looked like a commercial with the postings of the various flyers to what I am doing. It's free and I figured what the hell. I am still getting used to the next round of being a nightclub DJ. I am steering clear of all the negative stuff as well as dodging the daggers that some people are throwing at my back. Much came to full circle when the last bar that I worked at was closing and I was trying to secure the gigs that I have now. I really know who has my back and know is trying to stab me in it. It's all good, I got this!

Variety Baby!

I never thought with the highs and lows I have had in the entertainment business that it would land up to being back in a bar 4 nights a week! I am not complaining in the least bit. I was going through the "It's my twilight years" phase and at turning 42 this year I am back at it! I don't put my body through the abuse I did "back in the day" so I am more healthy in that sense. I don't see burn out anytime soon as it is just me so I am sole shot caller in what happens when I step up to the decks. There are 3 different formats of music I am playing on these 4 nights so that really is a Godsend and keeps me fresh for the next gig. Only the Fri & Sat gig has the same format and that works out fine. You have to have variety in this business and be able to relate to the environment. So far it's working and now better than ever!

Technology

It's pricey. But having to drag around crates of records and binders of CD's to a gig seems a thing of the past! I have made some significant investments in my set-up in the last 2 weeks so I can be updated with the rest of the world. I am very cautious on what I invest in and try to work the math in my head many times to make sure it makes financial sense. I don't wanna be one of these guys that sit on a TON of gear and not make money off of it. I am not saying it is all about money but I like to have a plan on making back what I put in. Having 4 bar nights a week, this latest investment will have paid itself off and over a few times when it is all said and done.

I hate the fact that so many "click and play" DJ's have popped up in the marketplace and are robbing guys like me of making some money in this game. Luckily now I have found owners I currently work for that know what I can do and compensate me very well for it!

That give me the drive to keep on!

Friday, May 7, 2010

On to the next

Tonight I start back at Peppers Greenwood. It's been a few years since I have played there and I am stoked about coming back. I worked there years ago filling in and over time it turned into a circus. I am hoping with the "Me, Myself and I" approach this time around I should do ok. I never claim to be the best or worse at what I do. I have done good enough to still be in the biz since 1986. There is something to say about that huh?

I did learn one thing a few weeks ago, popularity breeds contempt! I'm amazed at the amount of resentment people carry but that fuels me to go on stronger than before! I am in it to win it!

Whitney Baby!

I hope she is singing better than she looks..

I’m back (well, in a blogging sense)

Been trying to focus on other things in 2010 but decided to randomly update my blog again. So we shall see how long I stick with it. I may do some "video blogging" as well. Stay tuned..
